Italian, UK & European Bed and Mattress Sizes: a Guide for Homeowners in Puglia

One detail surprises almost every foreign homeowner: Italian bed and mattress sizes are different from those in the UK, the rest of Europe and the US. Here is a clear guide, plus how we can help.

Why bed sizes matter when you furnish a home in Italy

If you bring a bed frame from home, or order linen and duvets from abroad, they may not match Italian mattresses — and vice versa. Italian mattresses are usually 190 or 200 cm long, and widths follow their own standards. Getting this right from the start saves you time, money and returns.

Italian bed & mattress sizes (standard)

• Singolo (single): 80 × 190/200 cm
• Singolo XL: 90 × 190/200 cm
• Una piazza e mezza (small double): 120 × 190/200 cm
• Francese (French / small double): 140 × 190/200 cm
• Matrimoniale (double): 160 × 190/200 cm
• Matrimoniale maxi: 170–180 × 190/200 cm

UK bed sizes (for comparison)

• Single: 90 × 190 cm
• Small Double: 120 × 190 cm
• Double: 135 × 190 cm
• King: 150 × 200 cm
• Super King: 180 × 200 cm

European (EU) bed sizes

In much of Northern and Central Europe the standard length is 200 cm. Common widths are 90 × 200 (single), 140 × 200, 160 × 200 and 180 × 200 cm (often made of two 80/90 × 200 mattresses side by side).

US bed sizes (approx.)

• Twin: ~99 × 191 cm
• Full / Double: ~137 × 191 cm
• Queen: ~152 × 203 cm
• King: ~193 × 203 cm

The key differences to watch

• An Italian “double” (matrimoniale) is 160 cm wide — wider than a UK Double (135 cm) and close to a UK King (150 cm).
• Italian mattresses are often 190 cm long, while many European mattresses are 200 cm.
• A UK or US bed frame usually will not fit an Italian mattress exactly, and linen sizes differ too.
